Modern Seascape is a delightful painting that combines an almost mathematic sense of composition with fauvist colors to create a painting that is wonderfully modern, lightly abstracted and ultimately, quite compelling. This painting is a seascape in a very pure sense in terms of subject matter. The viewer is presented with three boats docked in a small harbor, bumping up against land that is dotted with colorful houses. The boats pictured here are perhaps the most immediate subject matter. Their orange sales, and bases colored in blue, purple, green, red and yellow, are quite eye catching, and are placed in the center of the canvas, lending them prominence. Yet, the houses along the seashore are just as brilliant, featuring just as many sumptuous colors, and built out of the same rigid lines that add a Van Gogh-esque sense of geometry to this original canvas painting. The immediate foreground of Modern Seascape is the water itself, speckled in a variety of shades of blue. Slowly, the eye makes its way upwards to the sky, which is also awash in shades of blue, only markedly lighter than the ocean below, as if to distinguish the two. Modern Seascape is an overwhelmingly whimsical painting that will add a bit of light and brightness to any living or working space. The liveliness of this painting make it ideal for rooms with sunny decors, or alternatively, for rooms that need a bit more color.
