Brown is a complicated, but beautiful color that is a mixture of orange, red, rose, yellow and black or gray. The English word for the color brown is derived from the old English word brun, which was used to indicate a dusky, or darkening sky. The word brown to indicate the color we know today was first used in the fourteenth century. In all its incarnations, brown is one of the most versatile and charming colors in existence. Brown is considered a low intensity color, and as such it often has calming, soothing powers when used in home décor. The color brown has a pervasive presence in nature, and as such, it is strongly associated with the natural world, even when used in home decorating. Many soils are brown, as are tree barks, the forest floor and a number of animals from beavers to birds. In music many artists have lauded brown eyes and skin, and thus, these are raised to a certain esteemed level of aesthetic.

What is so amazing about the color brown is that it can be used to make a bold statement, or a very low key decorative pattern. Due to the fact that brown is a blending of so many primary colors, it matches a number of colors quite beautifully. Brown pairs well with blue, yellow, white, purple and many more colors. Not only is the color brown attractive and versatile when it is paired with nearly any other hue, but it is also thought to create a grounded feeling in a room, and to make both visitors and inhabitants feel relaxed, safe, and at ease. Brown creates a soothing, cozy sense of place in a living or working space, yet, if you feel overwhelmed by too much brown, or your personality is far too flamboyant to use it as your primary decorating color, brown canvas artwork is the perfect way to incorporate the color into a space without using too much of it.

According to feng shui, the color brown is appropriate to use in all sorts of spaces, including the health and family gua, the wealth and abundance gua, and the fame and reputation gua. These are located in the east, southeast and south regions of your home. Brown is thought to have a nourishing energy, and brown paintings and artwork can be used in abundance in any of these spaces. Brown is a great color to incorporate into the main entrances of your home or specific rooms, as well as feature walls in living rooms or bedrooms.

Remember, the resonances of specific colors are most important in the spaces you inhabit most frequently, especially your home.
