Navy blue shares many of the qualities of brighter shades of blue, but also carries with it the boldness and power of darker hues on the color wheel, as it is between blue and black in this color compendium. The definition of the color navy is defined as a shade of blue so deep that it may almost be perceived as black. The strong contrast created between the color navy and lighter hues, primarily white, are an attractive combination that have been used together in many ways, but is very famous for its use in the uniforms of the United States Navy, as well as navies around the world. This pairing of colors was first used in the navy in the early nineteenth century. At that time the color was called “marine blue” because of its association with sailors, but the name was soon changed to navy blue. Beyond the strong affiliation with national defense on the seas, the color navy has also been commonly used in dress clothing and clothing for special events (such as graduation robes) and has been used in the computer programming as well.

Navy is a very specific shade of blue, one of the cooler shades of blue in existence. Like all shades of blue, navy symbolizes confidence, authority and calm, but also carries further connotations of intelligence, stability, unity and conservatism. Some decorators even think of navy as a neutral color, as it is so close to the color black.

When it comes to decorating with this color, navy blue artwork is a great choice to incorporate into any room due to its subtleties and attractiveness. Remember, that even in a canvas painting, a little bit of navy blue can go a long way.  Too much navy in any given room can dominate, while small doses create an airiness and serenity unrivaled by other colors. Navy is nicely balanced with colors such as white and gray. A bit of navy blue can also add a vintage vibe, particularly in canvas paintings and furniture pieces that are distressed. Other decorative elements to consider beyond navy paintings is navy typography, or paint detailing.
