Pablo Ruiz y Picasso (1881 – 1973) is one of the best known artists of the twentieth century, gaining both renown and fortune for himself during his lifetime. Picasso was a painter and sculptor hailing from Spain, but spent his most productive years in France where he is noted for co-founding the Cubist style of painting. Cubism is considered a variety of avant-garde art, shaped by influences from Africa, Micronesia, and native cultures. People were a favorite subject of Picasso’s, and he depicted them in all moods and incarnations- from gaunt mothers and their children to aristocrats to members of the circus. Today, Picasso is known as an artistic revolutionary whose experimentation knew no bounds, and whose innovation in theory and technique still hold a certain power in the modern artistic mind.
